La Grande Année - 'The Great Year' - a name simple enough to illustrate its exceptional status, because only truly exceptional years become vintage at Bollinger. This vintage is entirely fermented in oak barrels and is made from fourteen crus: 91% Grand Cru and 9% Premier Cru. 2008 is the first vintage of La Grande Année to be bottled in the new '1846' bottle, which will replicate a small magnum. This bottle has been completely redesigned, inspired by a 19th century bottle discovered in the Bollinger cellars dating back to 1846. The idea of using the curved shape of the bottle is to aim for the perfect balance between a "small magnum" with a narrower neck and wider base, to very easily slow down the oxygen exchange and therefore give a better quality wine with longer storage potential.
Vinification takes place exclusively in small old oak barrels (on average 20 years old), maintained in Bollinger's cooperage, of which there are just under 3,500. Riddling and disgorging are carried out exclusively by hand and take place after storage on the lees in bottles with natural corks.
The weather: After a rainy but mild winter without prolonged cold spells, spring came with some very local frosts. The cool weather returned in June and the rare sunshine prolonged the feeling of freshness. The spring to autumn weather was bright with sunny spells, and the long, warm days and cool nights of September gave the grapes excellent acidity at harvest. The 2008 vintage is quickly emerging as one of the best since the famous and now legendary 2002.
