Champagne Louis Roederer has decided from the summer of 2021 to replace one of the house's most famous champagnes, Brut Premier, with the new Collection. The overriding motive is the desire to lift the quality and character one notch higher, so that Louis Roederer further cements its status as a supplier of one of the market's absolute best non-vintage champagnes. The first edition of the Collection is properly called Collection 242 and refers to the fact that it is primarily based on vintage 2017, which is the 242nd vintage at Louis Roederer. The following editions of the Collection will of course also have a number added, which is derived in the same way.

The proportion of Reserve Wines (older vintages of barrel-aged wines) that Roederer uses has increased from 6% in Brut Premier to 10-12% in Collection. For Collection 242, it is 12% divided between the vintages 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The proportion of Perpetual Reserve Wines (older vintages stored in tank) has also increased considerably and amounts to 34% in Collection 242 - divided between the vintages 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. It is primarily this upgrade in the use of older vintages that ensures the Collection a high degree of continuity in style and quality and at the same time adds even more fullness, complexity and character. Collection is fermented and stored in bottles for min. 3 years, and the dosage - the sugar liqueur that is added at the end, amounts to approx. 8 g per litres.

Collection 242 is composed of 42% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir and 22% Pinot Meunier from many different parcels, 1/3 of which are located in each of Champagne's best districts - Vallée de la Marne, Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs. The relatively large proportion of Chardonnay in Collection 242 gives an immediate and delicate aroma of ripe, freshly picked peaches and apricots, but also creamy, exotic notes. Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier add more structure, dryness and a lovely, appetizing crispness. Discreet nuances of honey, vanilla, almonds and toast appear in the aftertaste. A full-bodied, harmonious and charming champagne, with plenty of character. The wine is perfect as an aperitif due to its freshness and finesse, but is also an excellent food accompaniment.

Louis Roederer

Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 and their fields are located in the 3 best regions of Champagne: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs and they cover 80-85% of Louis Roederer's total needs for grapes. 97% of the vineyards are classified as Grand Cru or Premier Cru.
